incubation

for solo clarinet d’amore
programme note
incubation (2020) was quite a unique work in my oeuvre. It thrust me in a direction that engaged more subtle, static and even strangled sounds in a drawn-out, slowly morphing pattern. The work’s title suggests much of the immediate sound quality is internal and expands outwards, but is also relevant to the nature of the instrument and the techniques that I explored with Richard throughout the process of writing.
The concept of incubating something drew me to the image of an egg or fetus and its natural growth and activity from within; exploring the textures and instabilities of one’s surroundings, and filtering them or adapting to them; perhaps even allowing them to evolve to more certain forms of themselves. This was at the forefront of the creative process for this work, and drove me to contemplate it as a dual state of ‘incubation’ for myself and for Richard Haynes and his newly developed Clarinet d’Amore.
