can i forget the rising sun
(2022, rev. 2024)
score – coming soon!
for solo violin
programme note
This is a short work about time – and not the linear time that we think we experience. A different kind of time. A more ‘real’ kind of time. A time that is felt, a time that is seen, a time that is witnessed. This time is seen, through the window of an apartment, from the eyes of a person – a lonely person who watches as time – their time – passes, day by day, rising and falling. While they are immobile the world goes by; time goes by. This devised text was drawn upon:
can i forget the rising sun burning my eyes, waking from another-fucking-wave of this morbid pressure in my chest
pit of the plum coarse and corrupt
a cancer – ever-present yet toying in benign bludgeon’ry
how can i move past those rays?
rays of fixation
(torment and taste!)
such a wasted opportunity
what a fucking mess i caused
chaos and i are entwined
but do we have to be?
can we be separate SOMETIIIIIMES?
(passage from VENUS IN THE DEPTHS, E.C 2022)
Snippets of this world are remixed and reiterated in a glitching, garbled storm of passionate ire, seething and writhing against itself with a miserly yet arrestingly self-aware introspection. It is a portrait of angst; internal, eternal angst. Angst about time – lack of it, or lack of harnessing it, and the fear of running out of it.
